So, how picky are plants when it comes to soil and what they are planted in? The answer is a matter of life and death. Maybe not that dramatic but the health of your plant can suffer if your soil is out of balance from their needs. Some plants, such as Ferns, love holding onto moisture, while Monstera, Philodendron, and may other aroids prefer a chunky mix that prevents their roots from being soggy.
If you put a Fern in the soil you would use for your Philodendron, you would likely need to water everyday to keep it from drying out. On the other hand, if you put your Philodendron in your Fern mix, you would most likely end up accidentally overwatering it which may result in yellowing of the leaves. This eventually could lead to root rot or loss of portions or all of the plant.
When you think about repotting your plant, ideally you want to mix a soil that allows the plant to live in something similar to what it would be growing in wherever it naturally grows. Enter; soil amendments.
We have put together a chart below of the most basic soil amendments. This will help get a basic understanding of the functions each amendment has and how it changes the structure of the soil.

PERLITE
|
Perlite is a volcanic glass that puffs up when heated. It is a great additive to your soil. if you need drainage or your soil to dry quicker This is ideal for not adding weight to your pot.
|
PUMICE
|
Pumice is aerated molten lava. It helps with drainage and drying out but it is much heavier than pumice. This can help if a larger plant needs more stability too.
|
HORTICULTURAL CHARCOAL
|
Horticultural Charcoal helps with drainage, but it also helps provide oxygen to the roots and maintain a good ph balance, removes toxins in the soil, prevents bacterial and fungal growth.
|
ORCHID BARK
|
Use as a potting medium for epiphytes or add it to other soil mixes to create a chunky, aerated mix. It is perfect for adding drainage while maintaining a bit of moisture.
|
VERMICULITE
|
Vermiculite acts like tiny sponges within the soil. when watered, it helps the soil to stay hydrated longer. this is a must addition for plants that don't like to dry out, like ferns.
|
SPHAGNUM MOSS
|
Sphagnum moss has a ton of different uses from making wall mounts and moss poles to helping maintain moisture within soil mixtures. it is especially good for propagations.

About twice a year we venture out to market to scour the vendor showrooms for the most stylish, unique, pots, vases, and home goods to fill our shop with. Keeping in line with all things 2020, this year was a bit different. Previously, reaching 10 miles a day from walking around showrooms was normal and so exhausting but the most fun. You make friends that you look forward to seeing and get to see new faces you normally chat with over phone or email. The hustle and bustle energy kept you going.
This year was an absolute ghost town. Shuttle busses were 1/3 full and showrooms were appointment only. With COVID-19 going on, this was a relief even though it felt so different being there. Shopping was slower paced but scheduled and it was nice to be able to see and touch new product to get a feel for the quality. Sunday was the only day we participated in but we still placed orders through mid February 2021.
As market approaches, Instagram polls are put out so feedback from customers can be taken into consideration while shopping. It gives us such a great insight to what everyone wants to see, or see more/less of. Colors and styles, textures, patterns. It all goes into creating a curated experience we love to give every time someone visits regardless if it's your first or fiftieth time.
Some of the products and trends we are looking forward to are:
We can't wait to share our new finds with you. Make sure you follow us on Instagram to catch all the new releases as they roll in.

Let me first start off this post by saying how ridiculously humbled we are by how supportive our customers and community are. As we approached our one year anniversary on Farmington, we were reminded how much we care about this community. I can’t say it enough - This is YOUR store. We have built it together. Every bit of feedback we are given goes into making it better.
Some people are new to us and don’t know about the name changes we have gone through. For those of you who were with us from ‘The Rewild Shop’ and earlier, this is more so for you.
In early September a letter came through my email and as I read my heart sank. It was from a plant shop called ‘Rewild’ in Washington DC, letting us know that they had the service mark for the word ‘Rewild’ to be used in any store name that dealt with plants, pots, soil, etc. and we needed to change our name. Sure enough, they had been granted their mark a few days before. My stress level skyrocketed and panic started to sink in. We had just rebranded earlier in the year. Would we really have to go through that all again. Maybe we were okay? What if we weren’t!?
To be clear, I did research during rebranding but it was all ill timing and apparently not comprehensive enough. In all the research I had done, nothing for another Rewild or Rewild anything plant shop had came up. I had no clue this other plant shop 3000 miles away existed. I did the only thing I could think to do next and that was to get in touch with a trademark attorney and prepare for the worst; Another rebrand.
Twelve agonizing days waiting for my trademark attorney to return from vacation so I could get an answer. Every waking moment I was scrutinizing every possible name we could think of to rename us just in case. Then I talked to our attorney and he verified what I feared. My call was at 8:45am and by 8:55am, I knew our fate. We had to rebrand.
After the storm had settled we got our bearings straight. We knew our anniversary party was coming up and and figured we might as well rip off the bandage and get the rebrand over with by party time. We hired a super talented Graphic Designer to help us with the rebranding since it not in anyway the most opportune time to do it ourselves.
Even though we are almost done with the changeover, there are still a lot of things to check off our list. That is where you come in!
As we have stated before, rebranding is not fun, especially when we just went through it a few months ago. There are small things that can make a big impact to us as a small business that are easy for you to do once our name has been switched over.
If you have tagged us on Instagram, if you would be kind enough to go back in and edit your post, that would a huge help.
Leave us a Google review if you have shopped with us in the past.
Facebook hasn’t been responsive about changing the name on our Facebook page so we had to make a new one. If you could take a minute to like it or even leave a review (since we lost ours) it would mean the world.
Tell your friends & family. Help spread the word!
Too Long Didn’t Read: We are unfortunately having to change the name of our shop. Bear with us. We are still slinging plants, ceramics, and home goods per usual. You are going to have to go back and read to find out why.
